Chapter 1 - How Kandido Was Brought Up in a Magnificent Castle and How He Was Driven Thence

In the country of Villalungrad, in the castle of the most noble Baron of DrinkenTenMoren, lived a youth whom Nature had endowed with a most sweet disposition. His face was the true index of his mind. He had a solid judgment joined to the most unaffected simplicity; and hence, I presume, he had his name of Kandido.
One day Kandido was meditating deeply under an apple tree on the words of master Pangloss: "It is demonstrable," said he, "that things cannot be otherwise than as they are; for as all things have been created for some end, they must necessarily be created for the best end. Observe, for instance, the nose is formed for spectacles, therefore we wear spectacles. The legs are visibly designed for stockings, accordingly we wear stockings. .. And they, who assert that everything is right, do not express themselves correctly; they should say that everything is best". His mind started to drift away. He saw a big black bird coming from the sky. It landed on his chest, and gently started to pick fleas off his hair. Suddenly it inserted its peak inside his open mouth. It dug deep inside the throat and flew away with a torn piece of his soul. Kandido woke up abruptly. His brain was still spinning. He felt like a big apple was fallen on his head. Direction West glowed inside his skull. "Mmmh... Maybe i have to go." He thought scratching his head.
That day Kandido, or the apple, made up the decision to leave the beautiful castle. First destination California. After a long road: Japan, Korea, China, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Iran, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turky and back to Villalungrad again.
